Building your Portfolio as a New Planner

When you are starting out as a new planner sometimes its hard to get clients because you don’t have anything to show but your word and your knowledge of the planning process . Maybe you even  planned your own wedding and you have those photo’s to show but again that was your wedding so what are you to do to build your portfolio.I know at this point it could be a bit overwhelming by not really knowing where to start and how to go about growing, just first remember your love for planning and designing someone’s special day. Next is just finding the resources to help you get your start!

Starting out it is best for you to team up with established wedding planners. Work with them as an apprentice and learn the business. Help them with planning and day of services ask If you can use these photo’s for your portfolio . This will help to show your hands on event work clients want to see what you have done in a planner capacity .

Also team up with a group of vendors and create a styled shoot treat this shoot just as you would a real wedding . Start with a concept and inspiration board and plan, plan, plan. Use this opportunity to practice your craft work out the kinks and enjoy designing . Make sure to think of all the special little details that make a wedding important, feel free to use pinterest as your inspiration but remember to take this opportunity to put your stamp on your work and show the wedding world what you can do . Take your concept and google your theme bring together your concepts with different textures, color and shapes, show what are capable of through your design process. 

With all that said you may have to intern or apprentice to help you build your portfolio, create styled shoots and offer to help others with their styled shoots . Reach out to your local wedding planners and volunteer to help out on a wedding or two to help grow your portfolio and to help you with learning the hands on way  . Remember that your portfolio is you in a book so make sure its a fab as you are .

You are starting on this journey of becoming a wedding planner because of your love for the craft remember this is not something that will come overnight, following your heart and creating the wedding world that you want to be in is what it’s all about .
